Kaethe Beck | Associate Vice President for Strategic Impact in the Life Sciences
Kaethe Beck serves as Associate Vice President for Strategic Impact in the Life Sciences in Purdue University’s Office of Research, where she helps advance university-wide research initiatives, partnerships and opportunities across the life sciences.
Throughout her career, Beck has worked at the intersection of research operations, strategy and growth — translating complex ideas and institutional priorities into actionable plans. In her current role, she works across Purdue to connect faculty, research teams and university resources; facilitate high-impact partnerships; and build collaborative frameworks that help ambitious research ideas move forward.
Creating Space for the Idea First
An important part of Beck’s work is her involvement with LINC, which brings together Purdue expertise and resources around promising interdisciplinary research ideas.
For Beck, that process sometimes means temporarily setting aside the pressure of a particular funding opportunity or sponsor requirement and starting instead with the science: What are we trying to accomplish, who needs to be involved, and what would it take to make the idea work? From there, she helps teams explore different paths forward and connect with the people, expertise and resources that can help.
Beck describes the process as persistent and iterative: there is almost always a Plan A, B and C — and sometimes the path goes considerably farther down the alphabet before the right approach emerges. The goal is to keep working the idea until the right combination of people, resources and opportunities comes together.

A Few Questions with Kaethe
What was your very first job?
My father is a faculty member, so clearly, he put me to work in the lab when I was old enough to not be in danger — and see over the optical table.
What could you give a 10-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?
Toss-up: how to change the oil in your car or how to make gingerbread cookies. ‘Add flour until consistency looks correct’ requires some explanation.
What is one thing you’re unusually good at that has nothing to do with your job?
Parallel parking. It is my only God-given talent. Everything else I earned — and usually the hard way.
What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?
I learned how to fly a Cessna when I was 18 because I thought I was going to the Air Force Academy. They rejected me, which really was the right call for both of us — following orders without question isn’t my strong suit.
What are you currently reading, watching or listening to?
I have a 14-year-old (among other children) at home, so Noah Kahan is basically on repeat, like it or not.
