Workshop: Nitrogen Fate Shapes Agriculture's Sustainable Future

We welcome you to register for the Nitrogen Fate Shapes Agriculture's Sustainable Future workshop, a one-day event sponsored by the Purdue Institute for a Sustainable Future (ISF) and the Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) innovation partnerships grant program.

The Purdue Institute for a Sustainable Future invites researchers interested in discussing the influence of nitrogen fertilization, soil storage, and microbial cycling on nitrogen residence times in catchments, runoff loads, nitrous oxide greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural soils or downstream aquatic systems, optimizing nutrient use efficiency of crops, and links to crop productivity and soil carbon sequestration.

Join us on September 19th, 2025 for a full day of engaging sessions, keynote address, and meaningful networking opportunities.

    Friday, September 19th, 2025

Keynote Presentation: How Science is Informing the Future of Agriculture in Michigan
    Laura T. Johnson, Ph.D.
    Chief Science Officer
Office of Agricultural Science and Research
Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development

    Expert Panel and Breakout Discussions
Topics including historical nitrogen's environmental impact, soil-water-atmosphere interactions, innovation and best-practices, and policy and governance.

    Keynote Presenter Bio

Dr. Laura Johnson is Chief Science Officer at the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) where she is working to address current issues facing the food and agricultural industry using best-available science and innovative research. Prior to joining MDARD in 2024, Laura was best known for translating long-term monitoring of streams and rivers into actionable management. Along with collaborators, she played a key role in forecasting bloom severity in Lake Erie, assessing the primary sources of nutrient and sediment pollution in watersheds, and tracking the success of various land management strategies.

    Registration

All are welcome to attend the keynote presentation at 10am. If you plan to stay for the remainder of the workshop, registration is required
