Impacts of Crop Improvement from International Agricultural Research on Land Use, Biodiversity and Terrestrial Carbon

Uris Baldos Presents: Beginning in the 1960s, the international agricultural research centers that make up the CGIAR have made significant contributions to raising yields of staple food crops. Originally intended to reduce global hunger, these innovations in crop production also have major implications for the environment. This study uses new advances in geospatial economic modeling to assess the impact of productivity gains from these ‘Green Revolution’ technologies over 1970-2015 for their effects on global land use, biodiversity and terrestrial carbon stocks.
