Huber named David E. Ross Director of the Purdue Institute for a Sustainable Future

In its June 9 meeting, the Purdue Board of Trustees approved the appointment of Matthew Huber as the David E. Ross Director of the Purdue Institute for a Sustainable Future. Huber is a renowned Purdue researcher whose work has helped to inform and influence the public, media and policymakers on Earth’s habitability, resilience and sustainability. Huber brings a rich record of leadership and research experience that draws from his current role as director of the Purdue Institute for a Sustainable Future, a previous role as director of the Purdue Climate Change Research Center, and his extended engagement and leadership roles in the climate change science research community. Huber has published over 120 journal papers with nearly 7,500 citations. After receiving a doctorate in earth sciences from the University of California, Santa Cruz, Huber joined Purdue as an assistant professor in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences in 2003. In 2007, he was promoted to associate professor and in 2011 became a full professor. “At Purdue, we are building out the future by focusing on sustainable solutions that ensure future generations will have clean air and water, abundant and nutritious food, a healthy climate, diverse ecosystems, and vibrant economies and societies that offer opportunity and security for all,” Huber said. “Within the Institute for a Sustainable Future, we are bringing together experts from across many disciplines to build out this future, and I am honored, in my new role, to help our amazing Purdue faculty and staff achieve this grand vision.”

ISF 2023-2024 Graduate Fellowships

ISF is thrilled to announce the recipients of their inaugural 2023-2024 ISF Graduate Fellowships: Miriam Stevens and Wagner Tamagno Sr. Miriam Stevens is a 4th year PhD student in Environmental Ecological Engineering whose research focuses on circular economy development and supply chain analysis of critical materials. Wagner Tamagno is a 1st year PhD student in toxicology researching neurotoxicity.

Purdue Extension to Connect Underserved Communities with Funding for Energy and Environmental Improvements

Purdue Extension has been selected to support a multistate effort that will help rural, tribal, and underserved communities access federal funding for energy and environmental improvement efforts. At Purdue, the project is being led by Michael Wilcox and Co-PI Kara Salazar, both in Purdue Extension Community Development, with additional support from Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant, the Purdue Center for Regional Development, and the North Central Regional Center for Rural Development.

Shanyue Guan (CMT) is developing novel sensors and damage detection algorithms that can be integrate with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Using customized post-processing algorithms, they can detect whether there is damage, and if so, determine its location and severity.

Six Purdue Students Receive Honorable Mention for Environmental Justice Challenges Video

Six graduate students received an honorable mention for their work with Sa Liu (HSCI) on developing a short video about environmental contamination in Martinsville, IN. The six students were from several of departments across Purdue's campus including Political Science, Public Health, Health Sciences, Anthropology, and Environmental Sciences Engineering. The students won a $12,500 prize.
