CE's Crawford receives esteemed IEEE Mildred Dresselhaus Medal

Purdue University’s Melba Crawford, the Nancy Uridil and Francis Bossu Professor in Civil Engineering, is the recipient of the 2023 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Mildred Dresselhaus Medal for "contributions to remote sensing technology and leadership in its application for the benefit of humanity.”

A new study involving more than 100 scientists from across the globe and the largest forest database yet assembled estimates that there are about 73,000 tree species on Earth, including about 9,200 species yet to be discovered. “We combined individual datasets into one massive global dataset of tree-level data,” said one of the study’s senior authors, Jingjing Liang of Purdue University, coordinator of the Global Forest Biodiversity Initiative.
