Dear Colleagues - Welcome to the countdown! While classes and teaching enter into the final push, the Institute is maintaining and growing momentum as we reach out to advance research conversations and prepare for additional federal funding in the sustainability space. Check out upcoming meetings and events from our research communities below. Come hear about the research of John Mulrow (EEE), who will be speaking about claims of environmental efficiency at the Sustainable Communities RC meeting. Two faculty, Stephen Meyers (HLA) and Morgan Furze (BPP/FNR), will be presenting their research at the Environmental Stressors RC meeting. We would also love to see you at our last campus event for the season, a conversation about imagining more sustainable crop production with the #DiverseCornBelt team. The Great Lakes research initiative also has several virtual meetings on the books. This week, congrats to Alex Laskin (CHEM) on his recent successful grant on organic aerosols and to faculty affiliate Amanda Deering (FoodSci) on receiving the Leadership in Action Award. Also in the College of Ag, congrats to Laura Bowling (AGRY) for undergraduate teaching, Natalia Dudareva (Biochem) for mentoring, Mitch Tuinstra (AGRY) for work with undergraduates and Liz Flaherty (FNR) for teaching innovation. Further congratulations to affiliate Mark Wilson (HSCI) for his receipt of the Patsy J. Mellott teaching innovation award.

Pasty J. Mellott Teaching Innovation Award

Congratulations to affiliate Mark Wilson (HSCI) for his receipt of the Patsy J. Mellott teaching innovation award. His innovations include development of new hands-on activities in coursed including HSCI 33400 (Lung Physiology and Medicine) and HSCI 33500 (Heart Physiology and Medicine) courses within the biomedical health sciences major. The Patsy J. Mellott Teaching Innovation Award provides up to $2,500 for one year to individual or small groups of HHS faculty for a wide variety of innovative projects, including but not limited to the design of new courses, the development of new models for teaching existing courses, the creation of new curricula and the purchase of equipment to enrich students’ learning in a course or set of courses.

Wildfires do not just wreak immediate havoc and destruction — they also have a toxic aftermath, especially affecting drinking water systems. In the Western United States, recent conflagrations have reaffirmed the urgent need to issue post-fire drinking water warnings and to find and remove contaminants in utility and building plumbing systems

Dear Colleagues - Though winter cold has head our way this week, we’re keeping warm and catching up with what our faculty have been up to. Congratulations to affiliates Liz Flaherty (FNR), Laura Bowling (AGRY), Natalia Dudareva (BCHM) and Mitch Tuinstra (AGRY) for receiving teaching and mentoring awards from the College of Agriculture! Other faculty in the news this week include Elin Jacobs (FNR) and Lisa Welp (EAPS) for their recent grant on water redistribution, Mitch Tuinstra (AGRY) for his work on dhurrin-free sorghum, IL/IN SeaGrant & Aaron Thompson (FNR) for a recent grant award water equity. Ag faculty Jayson Lusk (AGECON) and Haley Oliver (Food Sci) were also in the news for their participation in the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health. Also see below for new publications from affiliates Andrew Flachs (ANTH) and Jason Lusk (AGECON). We’d love to see you at one of our RC events in early December. Our Imagining a Sustainable Future initiative is teaming up with the Diverse Corn Project and the Dept. of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture on 12/8 and the next meeting for Environmental Stressors RC on Friday, 12/9. No newsletter next week due to the Thanksgiving Break, but please let us know new, accomplishments and publications you’d like to share!
