Wildfire aftermath: Contaminated drinking water

Wildfires do not just wreak immediate havoc and destruction — they also have a toxic aftermath, especially affecting drinking water systems. In the Western United States, recent conflagrations have reaffirmed the urgent need to issue post-fire drinking water warnings and to find and remove contaminants in utility and building plumbing systems

Dear Colleagues - Though winter cold has head our way this week, we’re keeping warm and catching up with what our faculty have been up to. Congratulations to affiliates Liz Flaherty (FNR), Laura Bowling (AGRY), Natalia Dudareva (BCHM) and Mitch Tuinstra (AGRY) for receiving teaching and mentoring awards from the College of Agriculture! Other faculty in the news this week include Elin Jacobs (FNR) and Lisa Welp (EAPS) for their recent grant on water redistribution, Mitch Tuinstra (AGRY) for his work on dhurrin-free sorghum, IL/IN SeaGrant & Aaron Thompson (FNR) for a recent grant award water equity. Ag faculty Jayson Lusk (AGECON) and Haley Oliver (Food Sci) were also in the news for their participation in the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health. Also see below for new publications from affiliates Andrew Flachs (ANTH) and Jason Lusk (AGECON). We’d love to see you at one of our RC events in early December. Our Imagining a Sustainable Future initiative is teaming up with the Diverse Corn Project and the Dept. of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture on 12/8 and the next meeting for Environmental Stressors RC on Friday, 12/9. Purdue University researchers have proposed a simple solution to potential brownouts at peak times during hot temperatures: air conditioners that talk to each other. By distributing the times at which electrical loads turn on – even by a few seconds – power grids can be much more robust against these issues, with no discernible impact to the end user.

Carol Handwerker, the Reinhardt Schuhmann, Jr. Professor of Materials Engineering and Professor of Environmental and Ecological Engineering, has been appointed to a three-year term as a member of the Industrial Advisory Committee (IAC), part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
