Post-doc Focus: Anna Erwin

While images of fires, floods and drought fill the news, researchers across Purdue continue to work towards identifying potential solutions. Dr. Anna Erwin, a post-doctoral scholar in Purdue’s Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, will be supported in her work through a recently awarded USDA NIFA-AFRI postdoctoral fellowship through their Education and Workforce Development program.

National Science Foundation Grant Awarded to CIPP Solutions Team

Water infrastructure is critical to the safety and economic health of communities. The restoration and maintenance of water supply and wastewater infrastructure are ongoing challenges for the Nation. Center affiliates Jonathan Shannahan (Health Sci) and Andrew Whelton (CE, EEE), members of the Cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) Solutions Group, were recently awarded $330,000 from the National Science Foundation for their project “Towards an Improved Understanding of Plastic Pollutant Generation and Minimization Processes for Cured-in-Place-Pipe Manufacture.”

Recent American Studies Graduate Nominated by Purdue for Prestigious Academic Prize

Dr. Virginia Pleasant, who received her PhD in American Studies in May, was recently selected to represent Purdue in the national CGS/ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award competition. These awards are given annually to individuals who have completed dissertations that, in the eyes of the award committee, represent original work and make a significant contribution to the discipline. Two awards are given out each year, and individuals must be nominated by a member institution.

House Passes PFAS Action Act of 2021

The United States House of Representatives today passed a bipartisan bill that would begin to address the country’s PFAS crisis, H.R. 2467. The PFAS Action Act of 2021 will restrict PFAS air and water pollution and help to jumpstart cleanup at polluted sites across the country. The bill passed the House by 241 to 183, with 23 Republicans voting in favor.

Sometimes nature mirrors society in eerie in unexpected ways. That is happening now with Indiana’s songbird populations, which are suffering from a yet unidentified illness. Indiana’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and experts like forestry and natural resources professor Barny Dunning advise these precautions to slow the spread of this illness. This includes taking down birdfeeders, birdbaths and any other man-made devices for attracting birds.
