A search is underway for the next Director of The Center for the Environment (C4E) in Discovery Park. The review and interview process is scheduled to be completed before the end of the semester so that a new director will start during summer 2012. This is an internal search, and we welcome applications from Purdue West Lafayette faculty (application deadline is noon, April 16th).

Setting off in the predawn gloaming of central Alaska, we were the sounds of swishing snow pants, crunching boots and cold puffs of breath. As sunrise gradually lightened the late November sky, we took visible shape: a single-file parade on a narrow white trail traveling west, deeper into Denali National Park and Preserve.

Few have heard the world as Bernie Krause has. Originally trained as a musician, he spent years recording the most famous musicians of the 1960s and 70s. Then he left the studio to explore the origins of music in nature. Krause has recorded wild sounds in places few have ever been or even dreamed of. Living on Earth's Ike Sriskandarajah listens in.

Grant lends global ear for Purdue professor's research

With the help of a federal grant, a Purdue University researcher is leading an effort to further an emerging area of scientific research. Bryan Pijanowski, a forestry and natural resources professor, is bringing together a team of scientists, musicians, psychologists and engineers to launch the Global Sustainable Soundscape Network.
