When a chemical spill in Elk River contaminated the drinking water of nearly 300,000 West Virginians in 2014, little was known about the contaminant MCHM, a type of methanol used industrially for cleaning coal. But now that it was in a local water source … is it a safety issue? Would exposure harm brain development in children? Jennifer Freeman, a Purdue University associate professor of toxicology, wanted to answer those questions, and her group conducted a toxicological assessment on the MCHM mixture that escaped Tank 396 that day.

The Purdue University Board of Trustees on Friday (Oct. 12) ratified eight named faculty positions and the recent appointments of the university’s executive vice president for communication and vice president for human resources. Trustees also issued a resolution of appreciation for friends of the university, including two whose names will be added to campus facilities. Including Dr. Chad Jafvert, who was named the Lyles Family Professor in the Lyles School of Civil Engineering; and Dr. Ernest (Chip) Blatchley, who was named the Lee A. Rieth Professor in Environmental Engineering.

Maria Sepúlveda receives Purdue Agriculture Research Award

Maria (“Marisol”) Sepúlveda, professor of ecology and natural systems and associate head of research for the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, has been selected to receive Purdue University’s 2018 Agriculture Research Award. The award has been presented annually since 1982 and is the highest honor recognizing research excellence by a faculty member in the College of Agriculture.
