Purdue University and the Purdue Research Foundation signed a strategic research and commercialization alliance on Tuesday (Oct. 31) with the Universidad Nacional de San Agustin (UNSA) in the Arequipa region of Peru to accelerate the development of sustainable solutions to the linked socioeconomic and environmental challenges impacting use and supply systems for the region’s food, water and energy.

Research seeks to improve electrical system against weather outages

Determining how to improve the resilience of power grid structures in the face of outages from severe weather events is the focus of a multidisciplinary study by Purdue professors. The project, “Towards a Resilient Grid: An Investment Prioritization Decision Framework that Integrates the Growing Risks of Severe Weather-Induced Outages,” received a $468,851 grant from the National Science Foundation.

Purdue researchers to study wildlife reaction during eclipse

Monday's solar eclipse will have most people looking at the sky, but a group of Purdue researchers will be listening. Professor Bryan Pijankowski and his graduate students are gathering data from wildlife recording equipment. The thousands of files will be gathered from research sites throughout North America. That includes zoos, science museums and national parks. Pijankowski said he's looking forward to hearing how nature reacts when the skies suddenly go dark.

Discovery Park's Center for the Environment to be led by Tim Filley as interim director

Effective July 1, Timothy Filley, professor of geochemistry and soil science in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences and the Department of Agronomy, will serve as the interim director of Discovery Park's Center for the Environment (C4E). Filley is one of the founding members of the Purdue Climate Change Research Center and serves on the executive committee for C4E.

Following oral presentations on Feb. 23, a panel of judges and Discovery Park administration have reviewed the proposals and determined the winners of the Big Idea Challenge, a program that will provide resources to interdisciplinary teams of Purdue faculty and students pursuing bold proposals that address global challenges. The winning proposals and principal investigators of the Big Idea Challenge competition that will receive funding are: * Affordable Net Zero Housing and Transportation Solutions -- Leigh Raymond (Liberal Arts).
